The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius sits on Turtle Bay on the north-west coast, with thatched pavilions and villas set in large landscaped gardens beside a calm lagoon. It is a classic Oberoi address: low-rise, quiet and designed around privacy, with around 71 pavilions and villas rather than a big hotel block. We list it as a Platinum choice for couples and honeymooners who want space, gardens and a soft-sand swim beach without a mega-resort feel.

Accommodation runs from Luxury Pavilions with garden or ocean views (about 70m²) through Luxury and Premier pool villas to Presidential and Royal Ocean View villas with long private pools. Interiors use natural materials, high thatched ceilings and sunken marble bathtubs. Expect a terrace or private garden, air conditioning, minibar, tea and coffee and a flat-screen TV. Ask us which outlook and pool villa suits your trip.

Dining centres on The Restaurant for Creole, Indian and international menus, On the Rocks on the volcanic shoreline for grilled seafood and lighter dishes, The Gunpowder Room for adults-only Mauritian Creole dinners on selected evenings, and The Herb Trail for set-menu garden dinners at weekends. The Bar overlooks the ocean for cocktails and local rums. Ask us what your board basis covers and which venues need reservations.

Facilities include several outdoor pools, the Oberoi Spa (resident guests), a fitness centre, complimentary non-motorised water sports when sea conditions allow, and a kids club. There is snorkelling just off the beach, and Turtle Bay links into a longer stretch of sand for walks. Port Louis and Grand Baie are an easy drive along the north-west coast.

Overall, The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius is a Platinum north-west coast hideaway for couples who value gardens, pool villas and a peaceful lagoon setting, and for families who want villa space without a huge resort footprint.

Our tips

  • Pool villas sell out early in peak weeks; ask us which Premier, Presidential or Royal category fits your budget.
  • Book The Gunpowder Room and The Herb Trail as soon as you can; both need advance reservations and run on selected evenings.
  • Garden-view pavilions are quieter; ocean-view pavilions and Premier villas suit sunset watchers.
  • The hotel beach is small but calm for swimming; walk further along the bay if you want a longer stretch of sand.
  • Ask us about half board versus breakfast only, and how specialty dinners are treated on your dates.
  • North-west Mauritius is convenient for Port Louis and Grand Baie day trips; ask us to build a light itinerary.

What recent guests tell us

  • Guests repeatedly praise the landscaped gardens, thatched architecture and the sense of calm compared with larger north-coast resorts.
  • Private pool villas are often named as the reason to book, especially for honeymoons.
  • On the Rocks gets frequent mentions for its position over the water.
  • Many guests like the uncrowded feel with only around 71 keys.
  • Families note that villa space works well when travelling with children; ask us about interconnecting options.
  • Snorkelling close to shore is often mentioned when the lagoon is clear.
  • Some guests say the beach in front of the hotel is compact, then add that walks along the wider bay make up for it.
  • Practical tip from guests: reserve specialty restaurants early in the stay.

Our own visit

We spent a day at The Oberoi and were given a pool villa for the day. The villa wasn't huge, but the quality was incredible. The large landscaped gardens and several pools made the resort feel very peaceful and quiet.

There is a good snorkelling spot just off the beach. The beach itself is small, but it is part of a longer beach, so you can go for a long walk along the sand.
