Mauricia Beachcomber Resort & Spa is a lively four-star resort in the heart of Grand Baie, on the north coast of Mauritius, opening onto the beach and overlooking the bay. Shops, restaurants, bars, nightlife and a casino are all within walking distance, so it is a great base for exploring the island's liveliest resort town.

When we visited, the big highlight was the huge main pool, the sociable heart of the resort, with a fun, lively atmosphere all day. Mauricia is the most affordable of the Beachcomber resorts in Mauritius, making it a great-value choice for families and couples who want a lively holiday with plenty going on.

There are 204 rooms, from Standard and Superior Rooms (including beachfront rooms) to a village of 29 two-bedroom Family Apartments with a shared pool, three rooftop Suites with private plunge pools, a Loft, a Pool Apartment and a Villa.

Dining is at Les Quais, the main buffet restaurant overlooking the pool, and Nautic, for à la carte dinners, with the Bay Watch Bar as the main bar. Dining interchangeability with the other Beachcomber hotels adds lots more choice, and the All-Inclusive package can be used at Shandrani, Victoria and Canonnier too.

With a complimentary Kids Club, complimentary land and water sports, entertainment, an intimate spa and Mont Choisy Le Golf just 10 minutes away, Mauricia offers great value in a fantastic location.

Our tips

• When we visited, the huge main pool was the place to be, and it is lively, so it is perfect if you enjoy a buzzy, sociable atmosphere.
• Facilities are simple and practical rather than luxurious, which is reflected in the great-value price.
• The beach here is small, so for longer beach days, Grand Baie's boat trips and excursions to the northern islets are right on the doorstep. Ask us about these.
• Grand Baie's shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife are within walking distance, which is ideal if you like to eat out and explore.
• Ask us about the nightlife on site and nearby, including opening nights.
• If you would prefer something quieter or more upmarket, ask us for alternatives.

For families

The complimentary Kids Club for children aged 3 to 11 is open from 9am to 9pm, with a private garden, creative and discovery workshops and play-and-learn activities. There is also a baby care area for parents with infants under 3. The Family Apartment village has two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments around a shared pool, ideal for families.

Sports

Complimentary water sports include water-skiing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaks, pedal boats, stand-up paddle, wakeboarding, glass-bottom boat trips, snorkelling and aquagym. Deep-sea fishing is at extra cost, and diving is available nearby (ask us).

On land there are three floodlit tennis courts, beach volleyball, table tennis, bocce and darts, plus a fitness centre with a hammam and sauna (from age 16). Bikes and billiards are at extra cost.

Golf

Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole course, is about 10 minutes away. Ask us about green fees and golf packages.

Spa

The intimate, quiet Spa Beachcomber has nine treatment cabins set around a shaded relaxation pool, plus steam baths and a hair salon. It is open from 9am to 7.30pm. Ask us about treatments and packages.

Location

Mauricia is in Grand Baie on the north coast, within walking distance of shopping centres, restaurants, bars, nightlife and a casino. Grand Baie Marina is the starting point for boat trips to nearby islands such as Coin de Mire. Ask us about excursions and day trips.

Good to know

• Beachcomber says Mauricia guests have full access to the facilities at Canonnier Beachcomber nearby. Ask us for details.
• All-Inclusive can be used without a supplement at Shandrani, Victoria and Canonnier (in each hotel's own formula), and with a supplement at Dinarobin, Paradis and Trou aux Biches.
• Dining interchangeability applies at all Beachcomber hotels in Mauritius (a supplement applies at the five-star hotels, including Royal Palm, on reservation).
• Standard Rooms are on the first to third floors (the resort has lifts), so ask us if you would prefer a ground-floor room.
• Some restaurants may close on certain days depending on how busy the hotel is, and Nautic opens six evenings a week.
• There is a dress code. During the day, swimwear and bare chests are not allowed in the restaurants, bar or reception. In the evening it is smart casual (Bermuda shorts are allowed at the main restaurant and bar, and gentlemen are asked to wear long trousers at Nautic).
