Vietnam is rapidly developing as its economy booms, and the tourism offerings are only getting better each year while maintaining a strong cultural connection to the country's history. A trail of historic towns, cities and trading hubs dot the coast, separating the cool mountainous north from the agricultural south and the famous Mekong Delta.
Vietnam is a hot pot of language and culture, showing the strong influences exerted by China, Japan, France, Russia and the United States over the centuries. This can be seen in the different types of buildings such as the Japanese Covered Bridge in Hoi An and European-style boulevards in Ho Chi Minh City, and the cuisine ranging from traditional noodle soups to street-side stalls selling French baguettes with Vietnamese fillings.
Vietnam is home to a series of natural wonders. Cruise Halong Bay with its towering limestone island formations, or visit the vast Mekong Delta with its maze of rice paddies, floating markets, fishing villages and traditional Khmer pagodas.
There are also plenty of sights dedicated to the memory of the Vietnam War - locally referred to as the American War - from war museums in Hanoi, to the bombed airstrip at Khe Sanh and the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City.

One of our top tips is to avoid Tet which is the Vietnamese Lunar New Year festival which is regarded as the most important festival of the year and as such the Vietnamese head home and a lot things to do and see are not operating. Tet starts on the first day of the new lunar calender (generally the first few days of February) and goes on for about a week.
