As well as being a holiday destination, Sanur Beach is a historically important part of Bali. It was the landing point for the Dutch colonial invasion in 1906, and also for Japanese invasion forces in World War II. In 1963, Indonesian President Sukarno created Bali’s first resort by building the Bali Beach Hotel in Sanur to boost tourism on the island.
The area is known for its culture. Sanur was home to Belgian painter Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpes for 26 years, and his former home is now a museum displaying his most important paintings. The Griya Santrian Gallery is where you will find exhibitions of the best Balinese artists. Sanur is also home to the oldest man-made object on Bali, a 9th Century inscribed stone pillar called the Blanjong Pillar. The Bali Orchid Garden shows off the island’s colourful flowers. Hit the beach at Pantai Indah. Enjoy a cold, locally-made gelato. Eat at a local warung on Jalan Danau Poso or at the Pasar Sindu Night Market. Catch the sunrise on the Promenade. Shop the arts and crafts stores on Jalan Danau Tamblingan. Try kite surfing and windsurfing. Learn to dive or take a tour.
