The name of these islands in Indonesian is Tiga Gili, “The Three Gilis”. The Gilis – Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air – spread like three droplets off the north-western coast of Lombok island. Each has its own resorts complete with huts, beaches and amazing diving spots. There are no motor vehicles on the Gilis, promising a certain level of peace and quiet and meaning visitors must navigate the small islands by foot, bicycle or horse-drawn cart.
Gili Trawangan is the largest island and farthest from Lombok. It was used as a Japanese lookout and prisoner of war camp in World War II, and visitors can go through a cave tunnel to see the remains of an anti-aircraft installation. The quiet, luxury resorts are on the northwest side of the island, and you can find bars and budget accommodation on the southeast side.
Gili Meno, the middle island, is surrounded by swimming beaches and features a turtle sanctuary and coconut plantations. Gili Air, the island closest to Lombok, has a coral reef off its east coast and is a popular spot for snorkelling and diving, as well as stand-up paddleboarding and kite surfing.
