Madagascar is the fourth-largest island on Earth, and one of the strangest. Located off the east coast of Africa, near Mozambique, the country offers beautiful white sand beaches, iconic trees and forests, and completely unique wildlife. You will find animals in all of the island’s national parks, and the more remote you go, the better the wildlife will be.
Made famous by the 2005 film of the same name, Madagascar is best known for its endemic lemurs. There are over 100 different species of these charismatic monkey-like creatures, and they aren’t the only animals you’ll find on the island. A nature tour or safari will give you the opportunity to see flying foxes, cat-like fossas, spiky tenrecs and colourful chameleons.
Enjoy the sunhine on the beach at Nosy Be. Visit the island’s French-influenced capital Antanarivo where you will find hilly streets and historic architecture. Canoe the Tsiribihina River. See bizarre trees in the Avenue of the Baobabs. Cross the limeston pinnacle-laden gorges in Tsingy de Bemaraha.
