The Lion King was set in Kenya’s Hell’s Gate National Park, and it is easy to see why the much-loved film’s creators chose this East African country: its vast landscapes and abundant wildlife are an inspiration.
The Maasai Mara is one of Kenya’s biggest attractions. The enormous national reserve sits on the Tanzanian border, and is home to lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, hippos and birds. It is also one of the best places to see the annual great wildebeest migration, when approximately 1.7 million wildebeest cross between Maasai Mara and Serengeti. One of the highlights of this animal pilgrimage is the crossing of the Mara River where the wildebeest swim and dodge crocodiles en masse.
And Kenya has plenty more to offer: photograph the flamingos at Lake Nakuru; see the elephant herds at Amboseli National Park; relax on the beach at Diani; kayak the mangroves at Chale Island; or climb Mt Kenya, Africa’s second-highest mountain.
