Napa Valley in Southern California has risen to prominence as one of the world’s best wine growing regions. Farmers have been growing wine in the area since the 19th Century, but things really started to get serious in the 1960s as the first premium wines flowed out of commercial cellars.
With a temperate climate reminiscent of the Mediterranean and rolling, vine-covered hills, Napa Valley is a pleasant place to visit even if wine isn’t your thing. See a show at the Napa Valley Opera House, view the valley from the air in a hot air balloon, dine at one of several Michelin-starred restaurants, and learn about the region’s history at the Napa Valley Museum.
The valley is most famous for red wines such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot and pinot noir, but there is also a fine selection of chardonnay, zinfandel and sauvignon blanc created here. Wine drinkers can make their own way to individual vineyards or take a guided tour to match your taste. A fun way to see the valley is to rent a bike and ride around the vineyards.
