Costa Rica means “Rich Coast”, and when it comes to natural wonders the country really lives up to its name. Sandwiched between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, it offers two coastlines, each with fantastic beaches to relax on or surf at.
Many people visit just for the wildlife, and Costa Rica has a lot to offer. In the jungles you can find jaguars, sloths, tree frogs, coati, tapirs, scarlet macaws, toucans and four types of monkey. It is well worth a trip to see the butterfly observatory at La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Visitors can also explore misty peaks on the Monteverde Sky Walk and steaming craters of the Arenal Volcano National Park or raft the Rio Toro.
Around the coast you may encounter whales and sea turtles. The annual sea turtle hatch at Tortuguero National Park in September and October is an unrivalled spectacle. Cahuita National Park is the best place in the country to see coral reefs.
