Durban, South Africa’s third largest city, is located on the east coast. Its warm beachside suburbs are a thriving tourist destination. The city is known for its Golden Mile of beaches offering sun, swimming, and of course excellent surf for everyone from learners to professionals. Beginners should check out uShaka Beach and Vetch’s Pier. More serious waves are found at North Beach, Bay of Plenty and Dairy Beach. Adventurous visitors might like to try kite surfing, and observant spotters might see migrating humpback whales in winter.
Durban is home to the largest Indian population outside of India and has a reputation for culinary delights. A local specialty is the bunny chow – a loaf of bread hollowed out into a bowl and filled with curry.
There is plenty more to do in Durban: visit uShaka Marine World for an aquarium, water park, reptile house and family activities; scuba dive local reefs and shipwrecks; and shop the Amphitheatre Flea Market and the Valley of a Thousand Hills shopping district.
