Mozambique is south-eastern Africa’s premier beach destination, with white sand beaches, azure blue water and shady palm trees. The former Portuguese colony stretches over 1400 miles north from the South African border, hugging the coast of the Indian Ocean.
Maputo is a good place to start, easily accessibly by aeroplane or overland from South Africa. Go shopping in the city’s massive markets, dine in Portuguese-style waterfront restaurants, and explore the country’s stories history in the Fortaleza da Nossa Senhora de Conceicao and the Natural History Museum.
Heading north, you will discover hundreds of beaches and an increasing number of resorts, ranging from budget to luxury. The Bazaruto Archipelago is one of the best spots to explore Mozambique’s sea. The main island, Bazaruto, has snorkel and dive operators who can introduce you to the area’s friendly aquatic life including coral reefs, sea turtles, manta rays and whale sharks. It is one of the only places in the world to see dugongs (manatees) in the wild.
